About SouthRivers Data

The agency we wished we'd had.

SouthRivers Data was started by a former Enterprise Data Leader — someone who had hired a lot of consultancies, and been disappointed by most of them. We try to be the partner we couldn't find.

Why We Exist

A short version.

We started SouthRivers Data because we'd seen, from the inside, what most data consultancies actually deliver — and we believed the bar could be set quite a bit higher.

Before SouthRivers Data, our founder spent over a decade building and leading data functions inside large enterprises in Central Europe — most recently as the Enterprise Data Leader of one of the region's largest financial institutions. From that side of the table, we hired a lot of consultancies. Most of them were disappointing in similar ways: a senior on the call, a junior on the project. Slide-thick proposals. Architectures borrowed from a vendor blog. Engagements that were billed by the head rather than the outcome.

The good ones, when we found them, had a few things in common. The people we met were the people who did the work. The advice was honest, even when it cost the engagement. The team owned what they delivered, in plain language, with documentation we could hand to the next person. SouthRivers Data is built around those things.

What We Believe

Six things we won't compromise on.

01
Data is the only thing we do.
We are not a generalist consultancy that also happens to do data. Data engineering and architecture are the only services we offer, and we keep our team small and senior because of it.
02
Engineers, properly chosen.
Every engineer we propose has been personally interviewed and, in most cases, worked with directly. No bench-shuffling, no agency middle layer, no CV roulette.
03
Architectural thinking.
We're more interested in platforms than pipelines. Every fix we make is shaped by where the platform needs to be in three years, not what's easiest to ship this sprint.
04
Discipline about saying no.
We turn down work that isn't a fit, even when the revenue is welcome. A project we can't do excellently is more expensive for everyone than one we never started.
05
Plain communication.
No jargon walls, no surprise invoices, no buried bad news. You'll always know where things stand, in language you'd use yourself.
06
Your team owns the result.
When we leave, you have the code, the documentation, the decision history, and the confidence to keep going. No black boxes. No hostage situations.

Who We Work With

A specific kind of client.

We work best with companies that have outgrown their first-generation data setup but haven't yet built the in-house team to design the next one. Most of our engagements are with mid-sized SaaS companies, regulated enterprises mid-modernisation, and analytics-led startups that need senior architecture without making a senior hire.

We tend not to be the right fit for very early-stage companies that need a single contractor for a small piece of work, or for organisations that are looking for a body-shop arrangement where the lowest hourly rate wins. Both are reasonable needs — they're just not what we set up to serve.

We work primarily with clients in Europe and the United States, with most of the team in Central Europe (CET). Engagements are run remotely with on-site visits when they make sense for the work — typically at the start of an engagement and at meaningful inflection points.

Where We're Based

Central Europe, working with clients in both directions.

Our team operates from Central Europe (CET), which works well for collaboration with both European and US-based clients. Mornings we overlap with London, Berlin, and Stockholm. Afternoons we overlap with the US East Coast. Most of our work is delivered remotely with structured async communication, supplemented by on-site visits at the start of engagements and at major milestones.
